Depression

It’s important to appreciate that we all feel down from time to time at times and that is a common part of life. Sad and distressing occurrences happen to all of us. However, if you’re mood is persistently low or you are feeling hopeless on a regular basis, you might be experiencing depression. Depression is classified as a mood disorder. The individual may experience feelings of sadness, helplessness, hopelessness and loss that interfere with a person’s daily functioning. Approximately one in five or 20% of people living in Australia experience a mood disorder.
Types of depression:
Psychotic - characterised by periods with symptoms of psychosis, for example, hallucinations and paranoia.
Bipolar - involving periods of feeling depressed and periods of feeling high or manic.
Postnatal- experienced in the months after a woman has given birth.
Dysthymic - chronic but less severe.
Cyclothymic - involving chronic mood swings, possibly leading to Bipolar disorder.
